Hey,
Has anyone tried any of the new Oregon vanguard series of chain. They are really talking it up on their website. Whats the verdict fellows??? Later, Wade

How new are we talking, I have tried some Oregon VG on 2 small saws within the last year and would not thank you for it. Unless maybe if you were just trying to wear your way through a balsa or basswood. The Oregon VS semi chisel cut far faster and is a good bet for small 3/8 low pro saws. anything in the .325 or standard 3/8 you would likely want a full chisel cutter though.

All the bumperstraps on the VG chain mess with the all ready limited chip space.

I was on their site earlier I got the impression it was a new line of chain they mentioned that it cut just as fast their 72lg, had a deeper gullet and something about allowing the sideplate to get a better bite. I believe the model of chains mentioned were 72,73,75 Vanguard. I have personally never heard of it just happened along their site goofing around on the web. I have always run the lg series. anyway just was wondering, later Wade Huggins

I have only tried it on the 91 series low pro, It just did not cut it in that size so I didn't expect anything different on the standard 3/8. It might well outcut some other safety chain, but I don't see the point unless having the safety chain bumpers is a must for the application.

Also weight is a factor, the extra metal in the bumpers is more energy wasted in accelerations and friction. The lightest stock chain I have checked so far is the carleton chisel chain. I wonder if that is why Art Martin shows it being used in making some of his racing chains. Also the rivits are beter dressed than the Stihl RS, I dont know if it is as hard an aloy but that's not a big factor if your talking racing chain.

bumpers and friction

Timberwolf,

I know what you mean about bumpers and friction. I have cut for a guy from time to time, he is a great guy always has top rate stuff but he always buys Oregon chain with the bumpers. I try to tell him the chain really slows down the performance of my saw especially on a 24 inch bar. He says Ah! really I cant tell the difference however I dont imagine that he can since he files his chainsaw on his knees. I showed him a stump vice that I keep handy for when I am in the woods he just said AH! h#ll I dont need that. What do you do ? Take care, Wade Huggins

If he's paying you by the hour, apologize and acknowledge his superior choices. :)

If not, pull your own chain out of your pocket, swap 'em, and put his back on before you quit.

I do hate that chain!

Yeah, he pays me an hourly wage and supplys his own equipment. I usually work for him during the fall and winter months. He is wonderfull person easy to work for he really like's to have me around he will put a new bar and chain on my saw every Sunday and have it ready for me come Monday. I have to remind him I am not like the other crash-bangers he has around and that I can get a little more mileage out of a bar and chain than they can. He means well and I hate to hurt his feelings, Take care Wade Huggins
