What do you think is the best way to prevent damage to surface roots if a car or truck has to be parked on them? I live in a neighborhood under a canopy of 150' douglas fir and redwood. The streets are really narrow and people park on top of the root crowns of these trees. Myself included. Anyone have a good solution? I was thinking of adding a layer of wood chips and then a layer of rock.

That might work IF there was a fabric layer in between that was pinned down so it would stay in place. Maybe just a whole lot of bark chips would work; it's proven to prevent compaction as well as anything..

How long have people been parking on these tree roots?

If they have been doing it for years up to now, then I don't think that continued parking is going to cause more problems. The trees have probably already adapted.
