I have a stump grinder with a perkins engine that has 1700 hours on it and the balancer in the engine fell off due to the bolts breaking. Has anyone else had this happen?

Vermeer? haven't heard of it but could see it happening. Theres a lot of vibration from the cutter wheel transmitted to the engine with the vermeer shaft drive system.

It happens, not real often. I've had maybe 4 customers over a ten year period, (accumulated millions in sales). I recommend replacement of all the bolts, loc-tite and torqued to spec. The balancer is over $1000($1200-$1300?) so you don't want to be replacing it twice. I'll explain the proper timing procedure. The balancer may be available in the aftermarket for much less but I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. Put the genuine along side the aftermarket, if you can't tell the difference, you should be working on a engine with a $5k-$12k replacement cost. I'll PM my contact info and nail down the specifics on the options I can offer you. Have the engine serial number handy. There are only a couple hundred Perkins 4 cylinder engine models and the serial number is needed to identify what you have. It is located on the engine block, near the injection pump, aluminum tag 3/4" tall x 3" long. The serial number starts with 2 letters, followed by 5 digit number, then a U, then a six digit number followed by a letter. DF
