What kind of licenses/permits do you need before you can do tree work in city limits? I know there's probably something... you have to have a license to take a crap these days. Thanks for all the help guys. I love this forum.

play dumb

most people play dumb ...do the work. Personally i am licensed in my hometown and have never been asked for info when traveling. It makes me feel legitimate when I can say...oh yes we are licensed. We have to submit our insurance and bonding to the city to even do tree work legally.....

It depends on the municipality, and state. Many do not require anything, some a business license. Here in WI, all you need is the tax permit, a number for which to be a sales tax collector for the state.

If you go into Chicagoland, some munis requite license and
actual permitting, where next door it is do what you please.

I would think in a town the size of Eddyville (been there many times born and raised in Corwith IA worked in Garner) you wouldn't need much. I do know IA is quite strict on the Tax things and they do check for that stuff quite often. Most importantly have insurance license or no that will get you in a big trouble if something goes wrong. Call city hall they will have the answers you are asking us for. I know out here in Cheyenne you have to have your ISA arborist certificate to run a business not to do work but to run the business so if you are a one man show like me that means you must have your certificate or no tree work for you.

In Ames all you need is $35 and proof of insurance. I know Ankeny doesn't require a permit and I don't think Des Moines does either, at least when I called nobody knew of one.
