I just got the petzl pirana yesterday and was play'n w/ it in the garage. I think I'm gonna like it. I've been using just a biner w/ a munter hitch(I think that's the name of it) to decend a spar. Here is a size comparison...

I haven't had it happen to me yet, however some people told me that you have to constantly check the ball lock biners because the plastic will crack and they will open up on you. I have seen biners where the metal broke and they became 2 pieces.

Master Blaster,
Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Seems like it will work just like a regular 8. Maybe a little line twist, but oh well.

RJS,
The ears on the other 8 snag everything, that's why it collects dust.

82,
I don't have a clue how it happened just saw it and retired it. DANGER!!!

Got a Line Tamer too but can't get it to work. I use 2.2mm zing it and the Tamer just won't pull the rope.

Any suggestions from those of you who have one????

Thanks,
-Mike-

What i like about the Pirana is that it sits firmly on a Petzl carabiner, and you never have to take it off to load it.

Suposedly it will hockle the rope less, but I have not figured the configuration that makes that happen yet.

None of the rednecks around here have ever seen a figure-8 before. When they see me use it they always ask to see it. I like handing it to them while it is still hot. :D

Then you'll love the Pirana,

it looks so much cooler

Sorry you don't like your eight w/ears Brian. I haven't had the twisting problems you report. Maybe that is because I only use it for a couple of drops and then may not use it for weeks before I belay a couple of chunks again.

I use the 1.75 mm zing it and it pulls it no problem. One thing I have noticed is that the button seems to get pushed inadvertantly while it is stored because the batteries are weak. I am gonna start storin without the batteries in it.

I like wraps on a limb also but I sometimes find myself in positions where they either aren't handy , are not there at all or I fear injury to parts of a tree that are supposed to remain-then the eight becomes my false crotch. Nice of you to give it away-I hope that the new owner finds it more useful than you did.:)

I only use an eight for rigging. I descend on my hitch. I dislike depending on anything that requires human effort to support me. It seems much better to have a system that requires conscious action to descend opposed to requiring concsious effort to stay secured.:)
