Well, I got my first stump grinder this week, a beat on Vermeer 655A I believe. 4 cylinder Wisconsin, Yellowjacket teeth. Got it non running, needs a starter which went out today and a coil. I'm going to rewire all the gauges, put in new throttle and choke cables and a few other odds and ends. I will be grinding stumps next week or returning it to get my deposit back, lol.

Oh yeah, some pics.....

Lol, I would love for it to be a diesel but for the deal I got, can't complain a bit. I'm pretty sure this old beast will fit my needs better than a small walk behind like a SC252. I have only ever had a few stumps that had access issues. I'm kind of liking these old machines, simple and easy to work on. Doesn't really look like too much could go wrong that I couldn't handle repairing.

Maybe 80% of my jobs could not be done with a tow behind.

How much horses can this thing deliver?

Rewired the gauge cluster, new volt meter and key switch. The starter should be done tomorrow.

I put a terminal strip in it so the wiring that comes to it is replaceable in the event of damage occuring.

I just started grinding this year but couldn't amagine having to use a tow behind. I would say 90% of the stumps I have done a tow behind wouldn't work. Plus you would have to verify you can even get at it before you book the job. I'm glad I got my sc252 works great everywhere. Doesn't have the snort that thing does, but goes anywhere.

I am grateful to just have something to work with. I look at old machines like this as a good litmus paper. If you can make money with something that is old, questionably reliable and paid for, it will tell you in return what the next best move is. On a side note, I have enough stumps on my personal property that justify the cost of this machine.

I guess some of us live in different demographics, most properties around here don't have fences and access isn't too horrible. I also have people that want their property cleared out, these jobs have easy access.
