Well it finally happened. I bought a mill this weekend. I could not pass up this great deal on a great Lucas 613 that looks like it has hardly been used. It has the rail extentions on either end and an extra blade that has not been used.

I really wanted a bandmill but I figured I would use this to make some 6x6's with the recently dead fir on my property and maybe later on sell it and get the linn mill. I did not get a chance to set it up and make boards because I have to finish building the shop before I can play. Anyways here is the only picture I shot of it in the back of the truck. Anyone else run a 613?

What I really need to do is get the slabbing attachment, hmmmm...

Congrats on the mill. I have not used one but know a bit about them because I know several people that own them, and one guy came around an resurfaced some 10 year old red gum slabs with his Lucas in my driveway a few years back.

If you want to know anything about Lucas mills the Aussie Woodworkers forum Small Timber Milling forum (www.woodworkforums.com/f132/) is infested with Lucas operators and are very happy to share their knowledge with fellow Lucas Owners. They're a bit rough and ready types but just don't take any manure from them and you'll be OK.

Thanks Bob

I really wish it was the 8" model so I could put a 60" slabbing attachment on it but they only sell the 50" for the 613 and that really doesn't do much good for most of the logs I will be slabbing. Well for being almost new and getting it for just over 3k i can't complain.

A good friend of mine just got permission to take down a cedar tree by his place so the projects are already lining up.

I think a bandmill and a lucas would be a good combination.

Yeah the 613 is on the small side but like you said the price was right.

I am only about 4 hours south of you and have a big fir down if you would like to give it a whirl.
Congrats on the mill. I wish I had one to go with the bandmill.

I'm an hour from you and I've got a stack of wood you can try it on. Fir, pine, spruce, maple, cherry, willow, birch. :D

Well Done

Hi I also have a Lucas 613 had it for about 18 months now and love it . A bit slow but easy to move and set up also the used price was not much more than a new 3120 or MS880 with none of the fumes . Have the slabbing attachment but have not used it enough to know it . The reason the 6 inch has a shorter bar is the rails are closer together .
Not sure how much milling you have done , but let me know if you want the things I have learned spilled on to the page . One thing to watch is that the blade is clear of the log when you swing it . It dips down below the cut and catches the log otherwise .
Lucas have a DVD on the mill which is well worth getting and YouTube has a couple of good Vids .
Bob thanks heaps for the Small Timber Milling link I will learn lots from it .

Yes please tell me everything you know about the mill. I am getting exited about some of the uses for the mill. I have about 6 fir trees 12" - 18" that are dead standing on my property and I think they will be the first victims.

Hddnis and Backwoods, thanks for the offer. I think I am going to try it out at my place first and see where to go from there.

I love the portability of the mill. I wish I had it about 3 months ago when I had to get a large hardwood out of a backyard. I slabed the base, painstakingly removed the medium pieces and bucked the small stuff 12" - 18". If I had this back then I would have cut everything but the base in the back yard and pulled it out a board at a time. Oh well, should be fun.
