the advantage is the chain and sprocket is closer to the crank bearing. i would doubt it being any cleaner. makes changing the sprocket a pain in the butt. getting the chain on the sprocket can be a pain also..

Most people prefer internal clutch.....As stated before it is easier to replace simple parts like sprockets, without taking the clutch off. I think the advantages lean to the internal more.
 
My Mac 655 clutch is external. I find it easier to give the chain a "30 second tickle" with a file when I re-fuel rather than change a chain.
 
Heres my only current saw with an inboard clutch, I know its a cheap homelite, but it works for me.

I could have sworn I posted in this thread earlier. oh well, this is a more useful contribution to it I suppose.
