They're a reed-induction motor. Thin rings usually. Loud and slow. Fun to run. You need a big plug of Red Man in your cheek if you're going to run one of these in the woods.

ha ha. Don't plan on running one in the woods. Just thought it would be neat to have. I'm going to just see how much they go for. If they are dirt cheap. I'll snap them up.

P42's

Buy them! And if you don't, then buy them for me! Seriously, they are great saws, rugged and reliable. They didn't change much at all from the Pioneer P42 after the merger with Partner, and that's a good thing. Pistons, cylinders and rings are hard to find but other things are not so bad. I had one and sold it, and I regret it.

Do it! you won't regret it. If you do get them, I'll send you the blueprints and materials to make a set of two-stage reeds for them...

OH GHEEZE here we go. FEED THE CAD, then the CMD.

What will that do with the two stage reeds?? I've never run a saw with reeds before.

I agree with the rest. Buy them. I own one and use it the most. Fun saw. Torque too. Just a little on the heavy side. Hell if I can play my cards right. I might even buy one for you as well.

Those were great old saws.

Considered heavy even back in their day. Not the fastest or quickest revving saw by any means, but boy can they pull a chip. Great score if you can get them.

Take Care

There was an old distribator here that had PP and toro they sold out to toro and part of the agreement was to get rid of everything except the toro equipment! It made me sick to see pallots full of pp 655 5000 etc. brand new sent to the crusher! And what made me mad was they would not sell them to me I would have bought all of it!

I had a P-62 I used for a back up saw once. That thing was like a refridgerator with handle bars. I've had a few P-42's, and P-45's too. Not a real bad saw, but not my 1st choice either.

I'd love to get my hands on a P42HP or bigger. Just something about them, the sounds and the feel that I like. To be honest. I will pick up the P42HP before I will pick up my 372XPW. :greenchainsaw:

just got one looking for info

I cut a lot of timber at high altitude with a slightly-modded P42 Western and a 28" bar. The balance wasn't perfect with that bar, but I never thought it was slow.

As I said in the thread YOU STARTED about this saw, I have a P45 and wouldn't run anything longer than a 24".

They are a fun saw, with a great sound.

Welcome to AS.

These saws respond well to muffler mods and velocity stack intakes. I have one set up this way, with a 28" bar, and it pulls the bar with ease. IIRC, the saw tachs out around 12,000 RPM, so it isn't really all that slow.

Many of these saws have governed carbs. That will certainly make them slow. Fixing that is the first order of business.

Hey man I have a really nice p42 I just decided I'm going to restore/build please lend me some of your knowledge on these saws! Haha I want to do some mods if possible as well and probably run just a 24 inch bar and do a repaint/restore on all parts!
