A couple of weeks back I got a call from a customer I hadn't spoken with in close to a year. One of his neighbors needed a stump ground out, so he referred me to them. Now this is in an area that I don't work in very often. Maybe a day or two per year and that's it.

I go over and look at the stump, priced it high and they said to do it. I also commented about some branches that could stand to be pruned back, and then a small tree that could come out. Nothing huge by far, but they were tree huggers and didn't want to do any work besides the one stump. Fine. I head over there one day to do the stump, but before I left I called to tell them I was on the way (they are weekenders BTW) and I wanted to see if they changed their minds about the branches... sure enough they told me to go ahead with the few small branches... just put them on the ground and that's it. So I get the stump ground, and cut 3 small branches... 2 with the pole saw, and 1 I could have got with the power pole saw.

I go over the weekend to get paid... they are very happy, here's the money, but we want more branches cut. Fine, go there on Sunday (100*) and cut some branches to get a feel for what they wanted done. Now there is some volume coming down, and it's too darn hot to work anymore. So they want more work done still, and now they want the branches gone. I head over there another day with 1 other guy and a chipper... we did a bunch of work until we got dumped on by a thunderstorm. The lady was home, and was very happy... but still wanted more work done.

I go this week one day for a few hours and cut a couple of other branches by myself, just put them on the ground.

Gonna head over this weekend to hopefully get paid... and hopefully they won't say to do any more work.

I've gotta say that it's nice that the people like my work, it feels good... but I REALLY hate the fact that in the beginning they want almost nothing, and then I have to go back 10 times for stupid stuff... I mean in all honesty 2 guys with a grinder and chipper could be done with EVERYTHING they want in maybe 6 hrs. But when it gets broken up like this... it SUCKS.

I feel ya. On one hand your happy to have the work but on the other hand you've probably wasted an extra $150 in gas going back and forth.

Today was the same thing again. They want more branches cut, they want the brush gone, and the kicker is... there is one tree I told them in the beginning should come down... an EASY red maple. I've already cut branches off of it twice with the pole saw, and climbed it once to get some things that I couldn't reach with the pole saw.. if I wind up having to cut it down... that's gonna suck, I mean it's just a throw a rope up there and pull it over deal... not big. 8" DBH tops??

I think it is as frustrating as foreplay! Only less fun. Look at it as advertising for you in the area. It could pay out big in the long run but I know what you mean. Do you think they are whittling out the work thinking it will cost less?

You might have something there. working on the clock, including driving time, will stop the nickeldiming. tell em that up front, it is easy, practice saying it in front of the mirror.
