Anyone ever have any problems with your county planning and building departments with regards to your equipment parked on your property?

I have been dealing with my department and they will not allow my equipment (except chipper and chip truck) on my property. I cannot keep stump grinder or anything else here at home (mostly because a neighbor keeps a log of what I do every time I go in and out of my driveway).

That is what zoning is for, if your in a residential area, your not suposed to be running a buisness out of it.

I've known several people who have voted with their feet and moved to places where they have more tolerant codes.

Don't ever buy in a home owners asscoiation Steve, they would drive you nuts.

My Dad took two years to find a house that was big and high enough and did not have any deed restrictions against antenna towers.

Around here you are not allowed to keep any commercial vehicles parked at your house for more than 1 night. You are allowed to run a "professional" company out of your home, but nothing else. Professional = Dr., lawyer, accountant, architect, etc. I have a neighbor down the road who is an engineer. Probably 10 - 15 years ago he went and put up another garage so that he could turn the original one into his office. My other neighbors made a big stink about it, but he did it anyways. A good friend of mine runs an excavation business out of his home. He got into a LOT of trouble because he would bring his 10 wheeler home sometimes to work on it. Now, he is only allowed to keep 1 pick-up truck there at a time and that is it. If they catch him with more than the pick-up truck outside (backhoe, excavator, tractor, chipper, etc.) the cops can have a field day with him.

So far my neighbors haven't complained, it would be inconvenient if they did. My wife worries about that day coming. I rent a shop about a mile away, but... Usually park the chip truck in the driveway, sometimes with the chipper behind it.

I'm glad we don't have any of those wack laws down here in LA! I parked a bucket truck in front of my house every night for over a year.

Yes, the zoning laws are necessary I agree.

I have been looking for property farther out where no one cares what you are doing, but then the drive to work everyday just gets longer. And of course I am looking for no covenants or restrictions.

It is just a pain the butt to have someone watch what you do everytime you step out into your yard.

Forgot to add...around here one can apply for a special permit to have a home business in a residential area but there are many restrictions on what you can and cannot do...

I wouldnt like that one bit. I dont think that I could ever live in subdivision with covenants and such. I just aint made for them. If it is my land, then I will do as I please on it.

I understand their purpose tho, to prevent Jolly's Junkyard from moving in and lowering the value of the neighborhood.

It's amazing the differences from county to county. I live in the county to the west of Steve, one more county further from Indianapolis. For the most part, it isn't an issue around here, though it could be in town (the county seat).

The company I work for is run out of the home of the owners. No one has complained about the big mulch pile yet.:D

Steve, move over here. I won't complain! We could use another good tree service.:)

To give you an idea on how lax this county is, we finished our attic last year. My wife called the county, checking into codes, and the guy she talked to didn't seem to really care what we did, "as long as you don't fall through the floor"!
