Anybody help me out in identifying this specimen? The seed is originated from is apparently about the size of an avocado pit.

The customer is asking me if I know what it is, and presently I don't have a clue!

Thanks...

I'm going out on a limb on this one....
Compound leaves
"When the leaflets are arranged along a central stalk, the leaf is pinnately compound, as in hickories, pecans, sumacs and ashes" Hold on...

My guess is southern california walnut. From the info given. I've scanned audobons western tree id specs attached to word doc. Hope that helps.

hey, im not sure this is helpful anymore than narrowing it down for you, but i checked my Northwest native plants guides and couldnt find any matchs. my thinking was that your in CA so there was a chance it could be from up here, but nevermind that.

Looks like in the pecan hickory family, but I'm not qualified to say, especially about a Cali plant. You say the pit was from and avocado type fruit or that was the size of the pit?

Thanks for the efforts -

The customer indicated they gathered the seed from an arboretum, but they did not take note of what the plant was. I do not believe it to be a native Calif plant.

The seed was about the size of an avocado pit - but the seed is definitely not an avocado.

I have been looking around, and as of yet I have not come up with a ID that I feel confidant is correct...

Juglans, but nocal not socal??

Hi PB, I hate to be wiseguy but I think this is J. Hindsii Jepson(northern cal wal) not J. californica Watson(so cal wal) My source is Donald C. Peattie's A natural history of westen trees.

It lists socal a likely to have forked trunk, and smaller nuts than the nocal which tends to have a straight trunk and bigger nuts which look more like comml walnuts than the smoother and smaller socal nuts. Also the drawing in the book shows the leaves on the socal as slighly alternate whereas the nocal are exactly opposite as in the 2nd photo. FWIW, Dave.
