Hi there,
Has anybody had experience working with this honda powered portable winch. Looks the business! But does it stand up to continues hard graft?
I want to use it for a small forestry job hauling/skidding timber and brash up a steep hill from an area where there's no vehicle access.
Would appreciate any feedback
Many thanks

Looks OK, 2500# straight line force. It looks like it will flop around on it's anchor point, I would like to see a strap mount like GRCS and Hobbs have.

man wood that put the icenin on the cake!

hola,

I have one of those winches, and I am happy with it. I have used it to pull logs across wetlands, pull down hung-up trees, bunch wood in the yard, load small trailers, and pull logs to a trail through snow too deep for my horses. I often use pulleys to double the power.

Good luck

I bought one by echo, through Northern Hyd, the gasoline chainsaw style winch...................GARBAGE!! sent it back after clutch failure & every one they sent me afterwards was damaged severely, I just asked for my money back & did it the old fashioned way, they were good on the return/ refund end.

LXT..........

It looks like there is only one fairlead on it, how does it stay on the capstan for you?

I've had some where they fall off if you move a few degrees from side to side.

There is a metal guide hook above the capstan. You wrap three times around the capstan and then draw the rope through the hook. Then you pull on the rope to reel in. As long as you maintain pull pressure, the rope continues to reel around the capstan. Release pressure and the capstan idles inside the three wraps.

I've been using that one several years now, almost exclusively to apply lean for felling. I ordered mine out of Canada before they came to the states. Something went wrong with my first one and they replaced it pronto, without any grief, no problems since. I put a larger pully (available as an accessory) on mine to increase the line speed and lower the max pull strength. We use 5/8ths nylon double braid and apply a significant amount of stretch, so there is more of a continuous pull once the tree starts moving. Yes, I am aware of the dangers of using nylon, and my capstan winch with larger drum configuration limits the line pull to around 1650 max. If you look at wesspur, they now have a tree mount available, but you also need the reciever hitch adapter. I haven't tried the tree mount, but probably will eventually. We nearly always use a redirect pully to get the correct direction of pull, and locate the winch off to the side, out of the landing zone. You can watch your lean better from there also. If I have a huge tree with a heavy back lean, I use this and a 30 ton hyd jack, and have not had a problem dropping any of them against the lean. It will raise up off the ground if you don't get the pull slightly downward with your redirect, hence the need for the tree mount.

Forget that winch, buy this one http://www.capstanropewinch.com/WinchFrameset2.htm half the price, or better, less than that, just attach a chain saw to it. Superior product as well, it sounds like. I've had mine for years.

I have had one for years to, its awesome. I also have a harbegger chainsaw winch which uses a cable and lifts 1.6 tonne, powered by a 66. Wouldnt be without them.
