i just got ahold of a nice looking Poulan 3400 with low compression. i notice readong Mike Acres site the cyl bore is alum and the piston was chrome plated. is this beast even worth a set of rings? maby i should sell it as-is or part it out?

well, after pulling the top cover and spotting the carb flopping around, bolted the intake manifold down and the ugly green thing runs and cuts wood now.
heck i think i will sell it as it is.

poulan 3400

When they were new and the lightest thing out there, many loggers used them to nubb off tops and such and the poulan dealer would ring them fairly regularly, saying it was easier than a carburetor cleaning. So, ringing them was routine and easy.

I have to pre empt my statement by saying that site is the most comprehensive reference we have. but.... with that much info sometimes I believe there is typos and slight errors. a aluminum bore and chrome piston makes absolutely no sense what so ever if they were to plate something wouldn't they plate the bore?
My BIL has two of those saw for fire wood and seems fairly happy with them.

You are right about that. CSCC is a great site, but the info there are not allways reliable. Some pictures are misplaced (on the wrong model) also, at least in the Partner section.
The info has to be double checked before basing serious decisions on it.

Some of the Poulon saws seem to have been chrome piston and non-plated bore. Do not know for sure it just looks that way. I like the 3400 for what it is. Nothing special by todays standards but easy to work on and easy to run.
