I just got a replacement carb for my poulan with that pesky broken plastic strato lever. Its a walbro with a metal rod that slides around. I had to modify the engine cover for it to function properly. However, both hi/lo screws are screwed all the way in. I played with it for about an hour and it just doesn't run unless both screws are all the way in. Of course it has nowhere near the power it should have. Did I just get a bad carb? Should I try again with a different seller? I got it on ebay but also have an Amazon account. What's your advice?

Not sure what's going on here. Are you saying that the linkage that opens the throttle for the strato port is not working and you are running the saw with it closed? This can be done but with MUCH less power.
With both H and L screws turned right in, the saw should not even run.

I've modified that rubber gasket/spacer so that the rod is not rubbing or at least minimal rubbing. Did not notice the screws until everything was hooked up but yes both hi and lo screws are in (clockwise) all the way. I've tried 2, 2&1/2 turns out and saw will not start or run. Once started it will stall if hi screw is turned out more than 1/2 turn or with hi all the way in I can turn out low screw about 1 full turn before it stalls. Not certain who screwed this carb up but already got a refund from eBay. Should I try another seller? Perhaps from Amazon? I've never had a carb with screwed up (pun intended) adjustments.

I got one I had to cut/shave some of the cover to make it work. The worked ok when I finally got it tuned. It was a pain in the ass to get straight but a handy little saw for small stuff around the house.

I tend toward rebuilding carbs rather than replacing. I’ve bought carbs then gutted them for parts, though.

I sort of trust Chinese gasket kits. I do not trust them to cast, machine, then assemble a carb correctly.

I've done the same also about using parts from clone carbs and most generally can buy a clone carb almost less than buying a kit and sometimes kits NLA with a reasonable price..
I just got through buying a China clone carb for parts because parts were NLA for the carb I was working on AND the last time some of the pieces were available their cost was way more than the price of the complete clone carb.. I opened the clone and it had the exact parts I needed to repair the OEM carb. The carb now speaks both Chinese and English and has a Frankenstein tongue.

What is the exact model of your saw?
How did the saw act BEFORE you replaced the carb?

Kinda obvious that you got a clone or the wrong carb.
The factory original carb has a black plastic strato lever that broke off. Replacement levers are not available for obvious reasons.
I've only replaced a few 2 cycle carbs in my life but never had one with both hi & lol screws all the way in.

Is that one of the Strato type carbs?
similar to this one on flea bay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1147747332...hF7lWVjt9YgUBLHaegMt3KIhf5yZ|tkp:BFBMuKHjqaJgYou can usually find a Poulan Clone carb for less than $15
Just a hint also if you happen to have any other Poulan chainsaw with carbs in your junk/salvage pile.

Just a hint that I have done:
(the OEM Poulan strato carbs usually have the model number on the side of the carb in small print)
If that is a Strato type carb, two section type the upper section can be removed and installed onto a standard same model non strato carb if that will help you out with any linkages.

I would gander a guess that you have a major air leak, because as the jets are TURNED ALL THE WAY in is indicating that the engine is ALREADY getting too much air because as the jets are turned out you are adding more fuel (getting richer) It's indicating that it's getting too much air is PROBABLY why the jets want to be in.

Probably a bad clone carb if your gaskets and intake are good.

I've had to do some grinding bend mod's to them Strato Clone carbs myself on the linkages touching the manifold on some but was always China lucky keeping my fingers crossed and got a good run after doing the jets adjust at about 1 to 1 1/2 turns out with the spline tool.

My China luck Clone crumbled last few months though, bad 2 cycle tiller and a Briggs engine Nikki, both China clones bad. Ran worse than the OEM carbs and had to take parts from the new clones and repair the OEM's. The OEM Nikki asking price was around $200 and internal parts not available separate and the parts I needed were in the clone Nikki. at $20.

Seriously????

Seriously????

That is a strange one.
Getting a run with BOTH carb jets seated which should remove the gas flow through the jets to the intake. Might see if the H and L jets got reversed.

Both jets turned in all the way (normally removing all gas suction through the jets) and still getting a run????????????

If same symptoms from another carb, then time to look elsewhere.
The OP seems to indicate it was running ok just before his OEM carb broke the plastic linikage.

Might have to pay little more from Amazon Prime but fully refunded if bad/wrong item.
