I was just given a Poulan Countervibe 5400, sais it has 85cm..

Starts great but has no bar or chain. Looks like it was hardly ever started.

Is this saw anything? Any info on it?

Its not a common model to see, so I dont really know much about it. probably not rare, just unusual. I think this saw isnt worth too much, but I could be wrong.

I couldn't find much info on it, so I figuired it wasn't much. But for a free saw that looks new, what the heck. Put a 16 inch bar on it and go cut something.

Thanks for the link, thats more thyan I could find

If you decide to get rid of that poulan I'd be interested in it. they're not worth much, but they're really interesting to look at. get some strange looks from new age loggers by going to work with a lime green 85 cc saw when they've all got Stihls and huskies.

Hey osa there is Poulan 655 on ebay right now, just over a 100cc and made by pioneer, I think.

Well, I'd rather have the real poulan, not a rebadged Pioneer, even if it is 100CCs. I'd rather trade for saws than buy them.

The info sais this saw works with 16-36 inch bars. Should go like heck with a 16, wouldn't it? Or if its made for bigger bars would it work more efficient with a bigger one?
I cut anywhere from 10-20 inch wood

With a 16" bar, an 85 cc saw, regardless of brand, should be a light sabre in wood, a 20" still very good size/power wise.

The seller of that saw is an a-site member.I haven't a clue where he comes up with those saws, but he does.Out of respect for persons privacy I won't say who it is but I know a lot of sellers by the bidding names on e-bay and a lot are members here.

I have wondered how many times I have bid against someone off of AS. But I try to keep my bids to realistic #'s so is someone wants to give more than its worth I just let it go now, its not worth a bidding war.

I think we should have a locked thread that includes a list of who is who on AS, and thier Ebay names as well so we dont bid against each other. though I can see a problem with people still doing this, and arguing with one another about something they bid on on ebay.

It wouldnt matter people would still battle others even knowing that, if they wanted something bad enough, like I said all you can do is put up what you are willing to pay for something and if you get it great, if not then there will be another one come along.

I recently repaired a 5200 countervibe which I believe is the immediate predecessor to the 5400 and actually ran a tank of fuel through it cutting several knotty oak logs longways today. This saw has a lot of time on it and was used professionally several years ago; recently my brother bought it for $40. It's a bit rough but still very strong. It cuts a bit quicker than my Homelite 925 or 550 and is stronger than a Jonsered 2171 which it should be as it is 14 cc larger than the 2171. It has a strong midrange and decent top end. My view is that these saws were America's best last serious effort in the larger saw market but they were lacking in quality compared to the European saws which were coming on strong and taking the market at this time. This saw is about 2 pounds lighter than a Homelite 550 of the same era and not sure but I believe it is lighter than the McCulloch 850 with superior antivibe setup.

That 5400 runs real sweet. No bar hooked up to it yet. The way it sits there on the garage floor and bounces with each stroke of the crank, , you'd think it needed 4 wheels under it.

Thanks for the info on this saw guys
