Im planning on planting quite a few blue spruce trees for privacy and as a wind break along our property. Right now Im looking at planting them starting in April 2012 once the ground thaws, probably 10-12 feet apart, 10-12 feet from the fence line. I'lll use a gas auger to create the holes spaced out. The trees will likely be 2-3 ft tall and this year I've already started creating a mowing lane for where they will be planted. Right now its just flat ground with grass and remnants of alfalfa. The area will have plenty of sunshine, no shaded areas, and we plan on using a portable watering setup pulled behind the riding mower.
Are there any concerns we should be made aware of this fall to prepare for next springs planting..or should we consider planting a different time of year? Should they be staked?
We chose the blue spruce as the other farmer neighbors have planted different evergreen trees and the blue spruce has survived the best due to the heavy deer population, soil conditions, etc.
Any information or helpful links to planting these trees would be appreciated.
Thanks!
