I called a few mills today to see what they are paying for
White Oak logs, cut and hauled to the mill. Priced ranged
from $0.11 to $1.35 a board foot...narrow it down to stave
logs it was $0.35 to $0.65 BF.....one buyer for veneer logs
priced it at $1.00 to $1.35 BF using the Doyle scale

Any hardwood for railroad ties $0.28 BF International scale.

Thought I would try selling a few logs for hobby money (saws ;) )

Anyone sold any as of late?.........and what is White Oak selling
for where you are at?

not white oak but the pin oak that i cleaned up for the tree service was sold for 300 stump cut and hauled to the buyer on a log truck 46" dbh 14'6" clear log and he had a log man come tell him what to sell it for he got 300.00 for that one log and the log man told him to get an address and deliver cause the mills wheren't gonna give him near that price. The logger told him prices for all oak is in the trash here in ohio. fwiw I don't know crap but what i was told and now that I shared that I am done.

I had thought about it but have no way to load the log and only a single axle 8' trailer to carry them. Additionally, a few of the places around here have a sign posted that says, "We only buy from certified Master Loggers." Just a few of the monkey wrenches that are heaved in my direction.

Firewood sized chunks are easier to load anyway.... LOL

Lot of timber is cut around here, just in one phone book listed under saw mill, 27 mills are listed and thats just the ones south of me. Plus 40 miles from
me is where the Jim Beam plus others barrels are made. From what
I found out today the good veneer White Oak and Walnut logs are exported out of the U.S.

As of right now the price of Oak is so low that you are better off letting it stand and hoping it lives.. If it dies cut it for firewood. The mills here do not want it. There is not even pallet mills enough to support cutting it now. On the finished end it can be bought for $1.65 FAS or cheaper. That should tell you something as to the value.

Housing Market...One of the reasons the lumber market low.

W.Oak and Walnut are the only lumber "hot" right now.

The veneer logs make the trip to China via container trucks. We had 20+ container trucks in this year already. Veneer logs are mostly gone and have laid off that said of things for a bit due to the sap etc.

right now is not the best time to cut grade white oak because when the sap is up and it is exposed to heat it will stain the logs, thus lowering price, ive cut veneer white oaks(pretty logs) that went for upwards of $4 a board foot. cut alot in the 2-3 dollar range. white oak it going like hot cakes around here right now. red oak always falls during the summer(the red oak market is like a women with PMS up-down-up-down, always fluctuating) for just run of the mill logs, especially blocking oak logs-mat logs are the way to go, get a steady 30-32 cents a foot for them, and this is for the junk long longs 16-30footers

The price of oak in Canada is sh.t down 50 percent from last year the buyers tell us it's because the dollar is so strong. But everything else fell off this spring in the winter all the mills wanted hard maple now they have drop the price on it too.Just wondering what you guy's are getting for the maple saw logs down there the veneer is still good but we can't just cut that. There is alot of loggers here getting out of the hole thing and if things don't change soon there will be alot more.

Housing market is down, lumber got too pricey so other materials were used, like steel studs from China, instead of 2x4 . Like anything if it gets too costly other materials are used. For example plastic wood -- wood scraps mixed in a resin and made to look like board ... more expensive initially but you recoup it considering you do not have to treat it year after year.

Plywood is still strong and will remain so .

I have a friend that is a craftsman and he will buy select logs from me for his projects but he charges and gets huge money for his work .. the rich artsy folks love it.

In no way am I discounting what you have said but I am lost at why no one here will buy Oak of any type if they could ship it a few miles south for a market. Here there has been no market for awhile including cold weather logs.

On a side note how far south are you ?

A friend of mine is getting ready to have some logging done on his property. The mill won't even buy Red Oak and White Oak is worth more for the wildlife food value than the lumber value. The only species being harvested are Hard Maple, Cherry and Walnut.
