I don't know about everywhere, but the farm supply store where I get mine still has it for $14 /5 gal bucket. I wish I could get motor oil that cheap. Got me thinking, though...maybe I should stock up while I can.....

i stopped by another stihl dealer and asked what they were getting for a case of 30wt bar and chain oil. the little fellow behind the counter said $36.00.
not being sure i said excuse me. he replied with "what are you, stupid? i said $36.00". he then backed against the counter behind him and smiled at me. good thing i'm getting mellow in my old age. marty

Last time I picked some up at Wally world for below $4.00 canadian per yankee gallon.

Real good tacky stuff to boot, being sold under Wally world's house brand.

Little warning if any of you are in a Walmart and thinking of picking up thier gal of "SuperTech 30W Bar and Chain oil"... $2.88 so I bit on the hook like a fool. It does say "contains special tack addatives" on the label, but when I poured it into the saw it was as runny and drippy as regular 30W oil. So much for that nonsense. I'd take it back and plop it on thier return counter, but the drive there would cost more than the bogus gal of oil.

I have used inexpensive motor oil also as bar oil in the past without a problem also.

Last case of stihl bar oil (6 1gallon jugs) I paid $26 for it in Virginia, in chapel hill nc that would have cost me over $30! I normally run husky oil as I can get it a few dollars less than the stihl.

You might laugh but I have recently taken to using pre-used motor oil as bar oil. I ran out of oil a few weekends ago and did not want to drive back to town for more so I tried the used motor oil and it works fine. I now add a can of the generic STP type oil thickener to each gallon. This stuff also makes the oil a bit gooey like real bar oil. The additive costs about $1.50 which amount to my cost per gallon since the oil is free.

Since most used motor oil contains metallic deposits I don't think this would fair well on the saw's oil pump. Again with the same mindset as 2 cycle oil........just buy good stuff and be done with it!!!

ooooooooooooooooooo jimbo,
you just opened a can of worms saying you run WASTE oil for bar and chain lube. regardless of the price of bar and chain oil i don't recommend drain oil. it is already worn out :) marty

It's already worn out as Marty says but it's also a lot more carcenogenic than new oil and it's acidic. DON"T USE WASTE OIL IN YOUR CHAINSAW.
