I'm trying to find a high speed tractor-hydraulic log splitter that i could hook up to my firewood processor power source (a straight six GMC). Optimally, the cycle time would be below 10 seconds (20" stroke). What would happen if i just gave one of these 3 point log splitters more gpm's? I assume the oil would heat up - but i have 50 gallon reservoir with cooling baffles. assuming a 4.5" cylinder it would take just 1.3 gallons to drive it 20" (i think). at 30 gpm, that would be driving the cylinder pretty dang fast- like six second full cycle... What'd you guys think - would it over heat, wear out? if it is possible, what manufacturer makes the best 3-point splitter? i have no idea it this would work, but if its possible it would make my operation much smoother. appreciate any input!

I'm no hydraulic expert, but with your setup I say why not? My dad built a 3 point splitter a long time ago, and on his new John Deere it wings that thing really fast, I'd have to time the cycle, but it goes through the wood in a hurry. With your setup and especially the volume of hydraulic oil I can't really foresee any ill effects. Look at how fast the cycle times are on the cylinders on a loader on a decent size tractor. Go for glory and do it!

I operate a 3pt splitter and love it. There is alot of versitlity and yes, speed can't be beat. Mine is powered by a prince PTO. They make a 40GPM version of what I have. Mine is 21GPM.

thanks for the posts! I've been talking to a few manufacturers in the last few days, and they seem to think my proposal is possible. It seems that there are very few limiting factors that are in play with a big enough power source- like a tractor or truck engine. Wkpoor, do you know of a place online that sells your splitter? And is the 40 gpm just the pump, or is it a different cylinder and valve combination as well, to handle the extra gpm's?
thanks again!

My splitter was part store purchase and part custom fab. The main beam and component are TSC and the frame and tank are custom. Just go to Prince's website and look at the options. These are for tractors only when I say PTO pump.
