Does any one know if there are different grit grinding wheels available for bar rail grinders?? I've done a search here, but have come up empty or just haven't looked in the right place yet.

Also, is there a tool available to make sure the wheel is grinding true and square. I don't have a problem with this but it would nice to have some thing to correct it, if did come up.

Hi Axe-man,

I haven`t looked specifically for different stones for the BRG but I`d be surprised if there wasn`t something out there in a different grit that would match up. What are you looking for, something finer?

I also wanted to note that the table on my BRG is fixed, shimes would be needed to change the angle, but dressing the wheel square to the table also works unless you bent your shaft somehow and had extreme runout.

Hi Jokers,

Yes, I am looking for a finer stone for my BRG. Mine is about half gone and will be needing replacement.

The current stone came from Foley/ Belsaw. I was happy just to find a replacement stone for the BRG because my BRG came used along with other things when our local hardware, small engine shop went out of business. I got every thing they had for bar and chain maintenance before it was auctioned off.

The stone I'm using now leaves some what of a rough finish on the rails. I use 80 grit sand paper to finish up after grinding. A finer stone would also be a big plus for doing the longer bars, because of the longer feed to the stone that is involved when you do a long bar like a 36" . 404.

The current method I use to check for a square stone is to take a piece of 1" flat stock, put it against the stone and then measure to the edge of the table. If both sides come out even I know I'm still good to go. I was just wondering if there was some thing a little better out there just to be on the safe side.

Small bars are easy and some what forgiving. But a big heavy long bar is a different story. It is very easy to screw one up with a BRG if you don't have a light touch or some thing isn't quite kosher, if you know what I mean.
