We have an older Rayco self propelled stump grinder. The up/down is the issue. It stopped going down when you push the valve in, but still goes up. Heres the kicker, when pulling the lever out for up, theres a very small spot that lets the ram bleed down (small as in 1/8"), pull too far it goes up, hit the right spot it bleeds down. Does this sound like a valve issue, ram issue, or both? Thanks for any help!

Sounds like a valve issue. Something to remember while working with simple hydraulic systems, everything you are trying to run (ram) is dumb, waiting to be told what to do(valve).

Thats what i told bossman. He was ready to buy a $88 ram from who knows where. Well take her to rhe hydraulics shop for a valve rework. Thanks a lot!

So because it will bleed down(thou using valve the wrong direction,) it only lets it bleed down till it hits bottom. There no penetration forced down.

From reading your first post I would have to say yes. If the ram is bleeding down it means the valve has opened a path to the return and will stop once it hits bottom.
