Hey guys,

I have a problem with a Stihl 036 carb. It runs fine wide open, but when you back the throttle off to anything less than about 3/4, it acts like you turn the switch to the "off" position.

From reading the forums here, it sounds like a low speed jet is clogged. My question -- How do you repair this, or does the saw need a new carb? If parts are needed any info such as sources and part numbers are appreciated. This saw isn't very old.

Thanks!

David

Could be a number of things. A carb rebuild kit would be a good place to start. You can get them at a Stihl dealer for about $12 or so. Does it die quickly, or does it sputter some and then die? If so, it may just be too rich on the L screw, and it's loading up and dying. You might just try a half turn or so on the L screw and see if that helps any at all.

Let us know and we'll go from there.

Welcome to AS.

Jeff

I tried adjusting the "L" screw and it had no effect at all, regardless of the position of the screw.

In addition to your carb, it could also be a BAD air leak (not a minor one which would show up idle or low rpm). Check your carb boot for a tear.

Got it fixed!

I wanted to follow up and let you know what I found. It turns out that the carb just needed to be adjusted. I mentioned before that the L adjustment had no effect. This was true -- the plastic piece that attaches to the top of the metal adjustment screw was slipping on the screw. I removed it, adjusted it, and now it idles fine. Now I just need to get a new piece to fit over the screw and hope I get it at the right rotation when I install it. :)

Thanks!

David
