I was cutting wood today when the 488 started giving me trouble. It started acting like it was starved for fuel when in the cut and eventually would die. It starts fine and idles great and if it sits for a couple of minutes it will rev up fine for a few seconds. I took the fuel filter out and it looked fine but it has a felt type covering on it so I'm not sure. Tried some new fuel and it does the same thing. Does this sound like a possible fuel filter probem or something more?

Have you checked the tank vent?
If it helps to unscrew the fuel cap, I would think the vent is the culprit.

If it is plugged up, there will be a vacuum in the tank when fuel is used up, and the engine will get starved.

I run shindaiwa and have Grandpa that is a dealer. Three things to check. Spark plug for carbon build up, Air filter... if they aren't good and clean they will run like that every time. I clean mine twice a day... morning and at noon, and if both of them don't work, I have had micro pieces of dirt...dust... you name it get into the carb because of the air filter and they will cause it to run just as you say. So plug and filter first and if neither work clean out the carb because there is probably something in there. 488 is a good saw! Our most used.

Looks like a fuel problem.Replace your felt fuel filter by a nylon one from a Husky. It will last forever, dont clog easily.Did you play with the Hi speed adjustment, maybe open a bit and try.If not better, then i guess you have to clean the carb.Unless you are suffering from vapor lock because you say when you let it cool, she seems ok.

Thanks for the advise.

I tried the things mentioned with no change in runnability.

The high speed is limited on how much it will open on this saw. Dropped her off at the shop this morning and after they gave it a going over the diagnosis indicates open and clean the carburetor.
I was hoping for the easy fix here:bang:

here is a picture of it. it is in pretty good shape and runs well. i will have to look up what i paid for it. what is he willing to spend? marty
