Anyone have any experiences with good, comfortable rain gear?
Have been the poncho route and the cheapo rain coats. Would like to get something a little more comfortable and last a while.

What do you 'all suggest/not recommend/currently use?

Best I ever had was a set of commercial sailing and sea fishing foul weather gear. Top with standard hood and botoms that had hooks for high boots, to avoid wash from deck.

I had them for 8 years, they were comfy and rugged. Have never found them like that again except for over $200. Am still looking myself.

Don't go cheap...

go to West Marine and get the best gear they have.

Otherwise, you'll be all wet.

Don't know West Marine, is there a web address, or other?

Everything I tried made me feel too hot or too clammy. I just carry a change or two of clothes with me. If it's a cold rain, wicking longjohns like polypropylene are a must.

Favorite rain gear of the true professional consists of:

stool

coaster

mug

pitcher

Helly Hansen rubber with wicking unders - winter
gore tex or vented nylon for warmer weather rain

I broke down last Thursday and went to Second Assent to buy some top of the line rain gear.
All week I had been getting soaked. My rain gear was in shambles, rips and worn out water sealing made me a very wet climber. I had had enough and was determined to get some good stuff.
I got a used pair of REI Gore-Tex pants with zippers going up the sides for easy on and off with work boots. It was $50. Also a used Marmot, Gore-Tex triple layer jacket for $100. It’s real nice, with good Velcro cuffs to keep the dirty water coming off my climbing hitch as I descend, from going right up my sleeve. It also has zippers under the sleeves that work great at keeping the steam down when it’s not raining hard.
I climbed in the rain on Friday with my new threads and I was so comfortable. It was a huge difference. It got me thinking. Rain gear is like any other gear used on the Job. It should be as good as it can get. High quality gear always pays for itself.

Yo dan,

Friday we lucked out and stayed 99% dry...Used the GRCS for 4th day out of five , removed two maples in very close quarters, with a split in one that required temp support, plus two branches fallen on the roof. Thursday, we removed a pine, near primaries....I have ropes still drying out from that miserable day!!

Only problem with waterproof breathable sport wear for work is it's not as durable as thick 100% waterproof stuff like HH. But I sure like the flexibility a lot better.

Hey, I wont climb in the rain or the lightnig that comes along with it. But I finally found a groundie that is Ex USMC. JPS, dont start pounding sand. LOL. Fortunatley we just get the afternoon thunder showers here. But its no big deal. Here comes the rain, we get pissed on and then its over. You can dry out with a cold Coors when you get home.

Honestly. who needs rain gear? you get rained on. work you butts off and then come home to dry out. Its not like we are out there for the rest of the week.

Yeah but the PNW, the East and Midwest are different.-It rains so much that those poor guys HAVE TO work in it. You and I can say we won't work in the rain and miss maybe three whole days per year.:p

rbtree i dont know where you get sports stuff is'nt durable i have EMS summit series gortex xcr coat and pants they are tuff take alot of abuse. the coat has pit zips that run from just abouve wrist to just above waist pants the zip runs top to bottom or vise versa

I have and LOVE the Marmot Precip. It is a waterproof/breathable goretex-type of jacket. You might spend 99dollars on it, but it's the Zubat of rain jackets.

love
