Well, I fired up the 441 today. 5555555 pm'd me and I hooked up with him to run a few saws in a few chunks he had lying around. I think I like it. It is a bit more temper-mental about starting than my 361 but once it's up and running mmmmmmm.

We ran it against his 361 muffler mod, 460 muffler mod, and his 7900 saws. It pulls easily away from the 361 and without a stop watch I won't say for sure but I think it was a bit faster than the 460. The 7900 is definitely a monster in its weight class and faster in the cross cut but noodling I think goes to the 441. It is much smoother than the 361 and about on par with the 7900 in smoothness.

Special thanks to 5555555, you're one heck of a nice guy!!!

Here's a pic....

Thanks for the pic and the report.

Cold 441 starting...

4 to 5 pulls on choke; 1 or two pulls on fast idle and my saw is running.

Once in a while it loads up on its side when I am driving a wedge. I may have to lean out the Low side and back off the idle just a tad. It only happens once every 10 (or so) trees I am dropping so I haven't made the adjustment yet.

It actually started great but seemed to struggle a bit at idle. Kind of had to keep a finger in it a bit. If I let the rpms drop fast it would kill. Once, after warming up a little then letting it sit 10 min or so I had a bit of difficulty starting it up again. Maybe I should have choked it rather than crank it in the run position. Of course it isn't anywhere close to broken in yet. We were playing with the saws so much we didn't run even a full tank of fuel through it.

I haven't figured out the 10 minute thing yet. Mine still does that and I have approx. 10 tanks through it. If it sits longer or less than about 10 minutes it fires right up. I'm hoping leaning out the low side a tad will help that some also. 90% of the time I have no trouble with it.

Yeah, it's that limbo thing between warm and cold start. I'd rather start it cold. But other than that, mine's started and run like a charm, even in subzero weather.

Same here. Only slightly cold natured on a lukewarm;) start. Usually just start it on half choke or on hot start and let it idle a bit.

So far that "limbo" start thing is my only major complaint. I wish the oiler threw out a little more lube though. I have it turned all the way up. The bar seems cool enough and haven't noticed any abnormal wear yet. I think the oiler is adequate but not outstanding.

I've got a 60" tree to cut soon. I'm hoping it'll keep the 28" bar and full skip lubed enough to get it down.

With mine turned up all the way I use 3/4-7/8 tank of oil.

I would definitely say yes then. Let us know how it does with the 28" bar. What type of tree? No wait, post the tree and let me guess!?! (JK  )

Is this the Ash with all the low branching?

Affirmative.

Should be coming down soon. Hopefully lots of pics.:)

Agreed. One of these days I'm going to put the HO oiler in, per Lakeside's instructive thread.

I would have guessed that you would have found the 441 smoother than the 7900, even though the 7900 is smooth in the cut for it's displacement.

The 441 is pretty smoooooooth...

I wouldn't want to take anything away from the 7900 though. It is also very smooth, exceptionally light, well priced, and a full horsepower stronger than the 441. I'm very happy with the 441 but if I needed just a bit more power I wouldn't forget to consider the 7900.

As far as power is concerned, I crosscut into the chunk the 441 is sitting on, sinking the full 25" of bar without any difficulty at all. It pulled great and threw chips like a banshee. I expected it to bog out but it just kept screaming.

I think the 441 fills the gap between the 361 and a 660 nicely.

I'm interested to see what 5555555's newly dn modified 066 will do... but that should be a saw in a totally different class. PM me when it gets it!!!

P.S. How do you get pic's to post directly to the message rather than just an attachment?

springs

Your antivibe springs are new yet, they'll soften up with use. They'll be at their peak antivibration until and after the saw is broke in, once the springs are broke in they SHOULD stay that way.:hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2:  ;)
