This stump grinder is a 1998. I need to replace the diesel tank, I have noticed I have to change the inline fuel filter every few hours of run time due to rust. Yesterday I drained the diesel to have a look inside, it is pretty bad in there.

This tank has the filler hole, and 2 other ports, one has the hose that runs to the fuel filters, the other one is smaller and comes from the opposite end of the engine. The owners manual is less than specific where it's connected to. If it were to the fuel pump, wouldn't that same line also go to the fuel filters? It seems like this might be a return from the engine? Obviously the replacement tank needs to have 2 ports as well, to hook both lines back up.

Thanks

My tank on my carlton 8018 trx is rusted some too. New tank cost $900. They make stuff you can put into tanks that cleans and seals the rust so you dont have a problem with it anymore. Alot of automotive places carry it. Pretty cheap fix compared to a new tank.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking a new steel tank, my first chipper had a black plastic tank, I just found one on a internet search for $110. Wouldn't it make sense for these steel tanks to be coated from the factory so this doesn't happen.

The other line is the bleed off line from the injectors. I have a 1642 as well. I will have to check mine out. I keep the tank full but I bought it used so...
BTW if you ever need to replace the rubber lines at the injectors go to a VW dealership. $4 a foot but no one else has it and nothing else will work beyond a few hours. Ask me how I know...

Good to know, thanks for the info. When I looked into the tank, the bottom 3/4 is where the rust was, the top 1/4, that would usually be empty, had no rust.

That's opposite of what I would have thought. Will have to check mine. Don't know if you know it or not but you can burn the old tank off the frame with a torch and grinder. I've done several welding/cutting jobs on fuel tanks (not gas) with no problems. Have all lines disconnected and flush as much old fuel out with water that you can. Start by opening up the top some so it can breath. Have at it. Get a second opinion... I don't want to say that and then you get hurt...
An arc gouger might never penetrate into the tank. Just strip the welds holding it. Good luck!

Thje 66hp deutz bolts straight onto a 1642,Something to keep in mind if you do an engine.

For sure. That would be a beast. A 66 compared to the original 44 would be huge. I'd have to wonder how the rest of the system would hold up.
