Hi. My son runs a stump grinding business and has an oil leak behind the top drive pulley. We are struggling to ascertain how to removal the pulley to get at it. Local shop says it will simply come off without the need of a puller. Any help muchly appreciated. Cheers Ron

With some pulleys there are extra threaded holes where you remove the bolts that are holding the pulley to the jackshaft and put those bolts into the threaded holes and it acts as it's own puller. The pulley consist of two parts that are tapered and the bolts pull them together and clamp the shaft. When the pulley is reinstalled you need to know the proper torque which can probably be had from Rayco. Rayco didn't make the pulley though so torque could be found by researching the manufacturer.

Photos would be nice.

A tapered shaft and two piece pulley is a common setup, on rotating drum machinery.
Do not use a pulley puller, it will only tighten the assembly.
Ask me how I know that.
The challenge is separating the hub and pulley when the two are rusted together. My hub threads stripped out, needed to heli-coil the hub to get the two separated.
This may help...

For the torque specs see page 29 of the attached manual.

Thanks for the replies. I am trying to get a photo from my son so I can post it up. The pulley in question does not have any threaded holes that would normally allow you to use a puller or act as a self puller. FWIW it is a gilmer type pulley. Will post up pic once I have it Cheers Ron
