As you can see the old stove is just that OLD. I'm ready for a new one that is more effecient. It will burn all night long But it has a huge firebox All the new ones i have looked at are a lot smaller. Does that mean they will burn all night long with less wood. This has been a good stove but it likes wood a lot. I know it's been asked a lot but which ones do i need to look at and which ones do i need to stay away from. I will want an inside stove again, I do like the owb stoves, but it would cost a lot for me to convert. Thanks for all replies.

the new ones are smaller.

all i can guess is they are much more efficient.

in the garage i have a double door fisher.it will go all night if i stuff it full and close the dampers.yesterday we bought a Pacific Energy insert for the fireplace.the fireboxes all seemed small so i chose the big one.it's rated much more than i need for the house but it was only $200 more than the medium sized model and had a larger firebox.it is supposed to provide 10-13 hour burns so we'll see.i am very nervous.the new ones have all kinds of after burners and this and that.the old one were just a metal box with a hole in the top or back.they worked though.

i bought a stove at HD a couple years ago.it was on clearance and looked very well made.the damper was above the door and i couldn't get any heat out of it whatsoever.i took it back and got a refund.the manager stated"you used it." i stated"that is how i found out it didn't work"

Hey Rick,

That's an old King Heater is it not? I've got one just like it up in an apartment over my barn. It used to be in the house on the center chimney with the oil burner but that was a no no, so I took it off.
You're right that they use a bit of wood but you can throw some good sized chunks in there and they sure do blow some heat out! Now a days you can still get an Ashley stove which is a new version of those or if you want efficient, then go for a Jotul, Morso or Lennox type EPA stove. Mega price difference though.

Yes it is, Thanks for some names to go look at. Yeah it will hold big chunks, Don't have to split them so small.LOL I will go and look at the stoves you mentioned. There is a place that sell just wood stoves close to me. Thanks again.

I have never even thought about home depot, Will check them out, Thanks

We had two stove like that one. First one sold with the old house. I think it burning ( w potpouri on top) made the sale!
We bought another one used and used it for ten seasons. If they were still making them I probably would have bought another one! The ones like it out there now I think are a bit " tinny".
We bought a jotul 600 and it cost a bit more but we really like it! It heats the house really well.

Do they use less wood to heat the same amount of time. I got this stove in 1980 and it has been my source of heat every winter. It's getting kinda cranky, Backpuffs a lot, Gets super hot even with the dampener shut. Don't do it all the time just at the worst time. I had to clean the dampner on it this year good, it was sticking and would not open. Just rebricked it about two years ago.

their stoves are junk.you will be sorry.

What?? Something Home Despot sells is junk? You're lying... [/sarcasm]

.... give Woodstock soapstone stoves a look. I know a couple people who are very happy with them.

Rick,

Could be you've got an airleak and that's why she's heating up like that even with the damper closed. I'll have to go look at mine but sometimes they have gaskets that wear/burn out and then they leak too much and are hard to control. You could probably reseal that King and be ok, but if you're looking for a new stove with better efficency, you can't go wrong with Jotul's Morso's, (both Norwegian) or Lennox are very good too. They don't make King's anymore but you'll find that Ashley is the exact same thing.

I live in Maine and actually got a better deal across the border in Canada buying my Jotul. Saved about $280 versus here. Also the local dealer told me he wouldn't sell the stove without his guys installing it which was as much as the stove again!

I have replaced all the rope seals around the doors 3or 4 times since new. The metal that holds the bricks in is melted somewhat, Really looking for more efficency and having to cut less wood to keep it going each year. I love running my saws, But timber is getting harder for me to get every year. I don't own any land so i have to beg and plead to get it.

Yep I hear ya! That's probably it then, the warping Causing the leak. At any rate, I think you can't go wrong with the Jotul stoves for quality and output for the amount of wood used. Those Lennox epa's are supposed to be really nice too along with Morso and some others. The most effecient will have some sort of "cat" system. These cost a bit mor and require a ceramic insert that you'll have to replace every 4-5 yrs. (I think?) If it were me, I think I'd go without the ceramic catalizer. Not quite as effecient but easier to maintain.
Your right about the wood situation. It's gonna get worse too as more people are forced to swap over. I find myself going further afield too find any wood. I work for a logging outfit so I can go too old landings we used a year or two ago but more and more I find other people have beat me too the stashes I've hidden around. I've only ever bought wood once but I can see that the day is coming when I'll deliver myself a truckload of tree length.

We have a large Napolean at my place and it does quite well. It's a bit fancy looking for my taste, but it does the job and of course the wife likes it a lot.

This is the first time too even go look at new stoves and apparently they have really changed. Never heard of a ceramic catalizer, I'm glad i asked here cause i would have no idea what to look for. But i will check into it thanks for the heads up and educating me on the features.

+1 I agree 100% with Steve about the Jotuls, have two and they are great stoves.

Regarding wood. I took my son's advice this spring and bought 3 cord of unseasoned hardwood for $510. to add to what I have cut. He told me it was cheap for its ultimate BTU content and that I was crazy not to leave the good maples around the property standing until wood gets to $500 a cord when oil hits $200 a barrel. Couldn't argue with his logic, although I still cut about 4 to 5 cord for general principals-both my saws and I need the exercise.

Who would have ever thought that we would look out our windows and see barrel equivalents of oil rather than maples and ash.

Let's not get too carried away...

.....a good yard tree is worth much more as a good yard tree than it is as fuel!

I realized wood could replace oil for my personal heating fuel in 1973.

I agree about "a good yard tree". I was referring more to the several acres of hardwood trees that I can see from the house that are much further out and ring my meadow. They're what I consider to be my "oil in the ground".

It would about kill me to cut the big oaks in my yard. I planted some of them several years ago and they are like a part of me now. That did sound kinda corny, But it would be true.
