Can anybody show me what real proof of Liability insurance looks like. I am working for a guy and he says he's insured, but the paperwork looks funny. So can someone post a pic of what it's supposed to look like. Thanks and work safe.

Proof of Insurance

I would call the insurance agent, or the carrier. If a phone number is not listed somewhere, then it most likely IS FUNNY looking....

It sounds like you don't trust the guy already. There must be some reason for that. Many fly-by-nighters don't carry insurance, they just tell the client what they want to hear, or carry a proof of insurance on a policy that was cancelled out for non-payment. If there is no work comp and you get hurt, you may get stuck with the bill.

Thats what mine looks like.More and more customers are requesting to be listed.
Which my insurance agent tells me that being listed will just mean they get a letter telling them if the policy expires. And if there is a accident all claims still have to go thru me.I guess the customers believe being listed will get them in direct contact with the insurance company and bypass me.

You can ask for the agents name and number, and then call them and ask them to send you (fax) a certificate of insurance. You can also ask what limits he has LEFT on his policy if you are really worried. That means that sometimes someone carries 500,000 policy but already has used up that limit in the current year.. and thus has a policy but no coverage left.

I'll bite. Looks like it could be real. Acord is on the internet.

But even if you call, you'll only know its a real insurance agent if he trys to sell you life insurance. :monkey:

"Accord"Is just the name of the company that makes the certificate"Template"
They have nothing to do with insurance.

Um, if you already have bad feelings, might want to look working with some one else.

Second thing...definetly agree with the other guys, call the agent.

Whoever even uses their insurance in the first place is a fool. If you have any damages (and I mean any) you replace it yourself or pay out of pocket to have it done. I have never damaged anything to the point that I needed to use mine or anyone else's insurance. If you can't trust the guy upfront, drop him like a hot potato. Remember, he might be holding your life line someday.

I have clients ask me if I have proof of insurance all the time. I tell every one of them that I have that faxed to them directly from my insurance agent. I also tell them anyone can make up any certificate looking document on a computer and carry it with them. Any pro will have it faxed directly from the agent ( with coverage dates stated). I automatically do it for any customer that is spending a significant amount on tree work as a courtesy without them having to ask for it. Heck, I'm even buying one well spending customer a bottle of scotch this week. ;)

The insurance company does not charge policyholders to fax or mail coverage details. The paper he showed you is worth less than toilet paper, because it is not absorbent.
