Today is D day in my attempt to replace a piston/cylinder in a Stihl 039 saw that I didn't tear down. I literally have a hundred parts scattered on the floor and I've gone through the service manual 5 times trying to associate the different parts with where they go.

No doubt I'm asking for trouble.

Now I find I am missing "elastosil sealant" as described by the manual to be put on the crank seals.

How important is this stuff and is there any alternative sealant. I no have "elastosil" .. heck.. it took me two weeks to get the "dirko" that it specified for mating the cylinder to the pan.

any help is appreciated.

Loctite makes an anaerobic sealer that works fine also, and resists heat. You can get it at just about any auto parts store and it's much cheaper than Dirko.
