I have a 394 coming (from kwdog75 in the classifieds here) and will eventually need to get a 36" bar for it (I have a 36" alaskan). I have a 20" bar I can use for firewood cutting and will get a 24" for the same purpose. Does anyone have any recommendations for a 36" bar and what I should be looking for - I'd like to stay with 3/8 but does it matter .058 or .063 guage? I've seen some posts on what type of tip to have (but generally talking about longer bars) so again is there any type to of bar to stay away from (or definately look for).

I've searched the milling forum but I'm still not quite figuring out what I should be looking for.

Any specific recommendations would be welcomed

I don't think there are any bad 36" bars being produced.

If I were buying a 36" milling bar, I'd get a 0.050" if it were available, because then I'd have the option of running lo-pro ripping chain. But, it seems like this question came up recently and 0.050" was unobtainable for the 395 ?

If you are not interested in lo-pro, then I guess the gage doesn't matter. 0.063" is probably the most common and easiest to find for the big saws.

By all means, get the 42" bar. Get a Oregon PowerMatch from Baileys, about the best bar for the money in that size. If you are going to be completely serious, then get a Cannon and be done with it. Pretty nice price differential though. I have the Oregon and it has performed very well.

Who makes the Woodland Pro bars that Baileys sells?

I thought the word going around was Cannon made them. Anyone know for sure?

If there is ANY chance you'll see a tree that needs your full 36" cut capacity I'd add 6" onto the bar and go with a full 42.

Go with a 42. You won't regret it at all. My 395 handles a 42 with perfectly well on the mill. Plus you can get the full width cut capacity with a 36 inch mill. I have an Oregon Powermatch and it is a good bar for the price. I also have a 42 inch Cannon for my 076. For the money, the Oregon is just as functional. (I just couldn't find an Oregon for the 076).

The Woodland Pro bars are made by Cannon. Good bars but pricey.

It actually handles my 60" just fine although I have found a weak link (mines a 394). The tensioner screw keeps snapping in half and I think it's from the added stress of milling AND milling with the 60" bar. I've replaced it 3 times in about 3 months.

I have the 56" rails and I have 30" rails too. I have a 32" bar for when I use the 30" rails. The 60"/32" combo is good for me but if I wasn't doing these large logs, just a 42" would probably be just about right.

These were 51" wide. I can get to about 53" with my 60" bar with the way it is right now. I could probably get a few more inches with some modifications but I think I'm ok here.
