I'm finally doing something with some of the stuff I've milled. These are 2 boards from a slab I milled when I just started milling. That was almost 2 years ago!

I belt-sanded them down with 40 grit and the used the orbital sander with some 40 and then switched to some 150 grit with the orbital. Pretty darn smooth already.

My plan is to attach them to the small shelf/tables at the ends of my couch.

I want to stain them with something and looking for some recommendations.

I bet a good satin poly would look pretty good one those. It's all a matter of what you like.
 
You can make it darker with vinegar & steel wool shade of gray to almost black. Linseed oil is perty makes the grain pop then polyurethane over if you {she} wants it shinny . Grab up some scrap and play.
 
hi to I haven't post on here but for what it's worth amber shellac is what I use on red oak it gives it a golden color
 
I like to look at just the wood....so all I'd do is poly them up and enjoy!
