Well, I just noticed today that my red sunset that I planted early this year b4 budbreak, is gonna be a pain in the butt. I believe this is damage from a borer. The last red sun I found a borer larvae in another one I had a yr ago, and it was worse than this one. Ended up removing that one.

The photos look like a hole in a couple pictures.
I took some b4 peeling the dead tissue, then some afterward. There was soft, soggy wood that came right out.
While Im thinking maybe the borer has exited the building, I'm debating if there any use in going ahead and drench some immadacloprid to get it into the vascular, or waiting untill next spring. I wish I had'v this past spring.
(Weather has been in the mid to upper 80's, as apposed to 100+ like we been having. And they are getting watered regularly)

I dont know the exact borer, if in fact thats the dilemna like I think. So knowing its lifecycle is an issue concerning insecticide timing app. But I plan on getting into the tree, and keeping it in that tree's system, atleast untill it seals around the wound.

Any opinions...Im all ears..

Is it possible that what you see is not a borer at all? If I were to guess I'd say old wounding & bruising to Maple tree stem from rough handling. An insect came in after the fact and nested in the dead tissue under the bark.

could've been from handling I reckon. I guess my thinkin was, it was planted 6 months ago, and it would've likely shown signs of "bruising" previously, be it losing uptake water thru wound or something.., and likely would've been multiple scrape wounds showing on the outer bark when damage happened...some green peeking thru. I don't recall any of that tho it's possible I missed it or possible to bruise without "scuffing" .

I was also thinking borer because while not knowing its ID, it's likely some "exit" mid-late summer as it is now.
U probly right tho, atleast I'd rather that be the case. And I also hope it's not some sort type of canker, but I really don't think so.

I agree with Raintree looks more like damage. Any kid traffic?

4 kids! Ahaa, that's it! My youngest just got caught by my wife with one of my tools he was using to leave a buncha paint removing peck marks in her Tahoe. Hes probly been thumping on my trees with his round wooden play swords! Lol wouldn't surprise me at all, seriously.

I was wondering..., is it possible at all, if one wAters a tree in 100+ degrees afternoon, that water on a thin barked trunk can be damaged like that, just as leaves can scorch when watered at those temps?
