I have a large redbud tree that was planted 7 years ago and has for the last two years started shedding bark on its trunk and losing leaves on its branches closest to the trunk in the Spring but keeping its leaves on the outer half of the branches. It flowers just fine every year but does not produce any seed pods like the other redbud we have in the front yard.
It’s had plenty of water and the remaining leaves grow large and stay healthy.
