I have a Redmax G3100T that I use as a backup climbing saw. It's run well for about a year but has developed a problem. Runs fine with the bar in a vertical position but when turned horizontally and put under load it stalls and dies. It's back in the shop now and the repair guy is scratching his head. He has about 20 of them in use by the local Amish framing carpenters and hasn't had a similar problem. He's replaced all the logical stuff; fuel line, filter, carb kit. He's also put new seals in. Same results. Anyone have an answer or run into a similar problem?
Thanks,
Phil

Yes, it is and I agree; it's pretty strange. When I stopped at the shop today he said he was going to try and rob a carb from a new one and either pinpoint or eliminate that as the problem.

When it dies is it like running out of gas? Or like you hit the switch? Does it restart easy or is it flooded or dry? Might want to check the wire from the coil to the switch it might be chaffed and shorting out on the engine when in horizontal position. Just a thought.....

It dies quickly as if the fuel tank was dry not like the plug wire came off so I'm sure it's a fuel issue. The saw shop guy is Amish but when I told him I'd be posting the question on the net he asked if I'd let him know any suggestions because he's stumped. I'll pass on yours and any other ideas that come along.
Thanks,
Phil

Hey Small Wood,

I imagine that you have your saw at the redmax dealer in Middlefield. If that guy for whatever reason can't fix it, try taking it to the garrettsville stihl dealership. He has been the mechanic there for 30 or so years, so he has the experience and knowledge. He might just have a answer. However, I think the redmax dealer can get it fixed. He seems like a good guy and also knows his saws.

Hope that is some help and good luck.

Thanks, that's good to know. It's Rays Repair so you're probably thinking of the same guy. It's still under warrantee so all the "lets try this" parts that he's been putting in should be for free. It's a good little saw. Not much power but we just use it for a backup or if we're a bunch of branchy stuff.
Regards,
Phil

Just as a follow up. It turned out to be a carb problem not fixable with any of the parts in the carb kit. Shop owner thought that it was a small check or flap valve when I talked to him yesterday and that if he had to get a carb in it would be over $100. I stopped in today and the owner wasn't in but the counter kid told me that he couldn't get the parts seperate from buying a new carb. I also found out that the 1 year guarantee is only for homeowner use. I told him to have it put back together as is and I'd pay him for the work he'd done and that was the last Redmax ANYTHING that I'd be buying. Not the shop's fault and I'm not mad at them. 'Just seems like a lousy warranty on a top handle saw. I bought another 338XPT. No more Redmax.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions,
Phil

The Redmax has a 2 year homeowner warranty and a 1 year commercial. The carb looks to be a std. Walbro WA&T series I believe if you buy a new carb from Walbro it would be cheaper about $55.00 - $60.00 but thats not the point this carb should be repairable also warrantied. Second note this model is labeled Redmax but its a OleoMac made in Italy. I have found why even as a Redmax dealer why sell copycat products that will have future parts availability issues. Is this the selling dealer you have the saw at?

Hi Scott:
My manual reads (for carb & some other items) 1 year of homeowner use and 90 days for other uses, which I took to me commercial or professional. I figured that it would be cheaper to pick up a carb online somewhere but I'll probably just hang it from the rafters as a reminder not to buy another one. It's a good little saw for what it is but it's simply not good enough to warrant putting any more money into fixing it. It's the warranty that I have a problem with; but then I'd never consider a top handle as a homeowner saw.
Thanks for the help,
Phil

Here's an update on this saw. Redmax has agreed to stand behind the saw and the dealer has fixed it under warranty even though it was outside the limits for commercial use. Even though it's just a $200 saw, they covered it without any yelling and screaming from me and I'm grateful for their integrity.

Phil

Thats Good to Hear. Im glad you got it repaired under warranty. If it was a saw I had sold, I would have covered it weather or not redmax backed me.
