I don't know Rich, I personally like having both dogs on my saw. On my Stihls that didn't come with an outside dog I added one.

The East Coast loggers think a little different then the West Coast guys. The guys out west like the large dogs and the full wrap handles and long bars. We like the half wrap handles, short bars and short dog.
When felling a tree we like to keep as close to the ground as possible. The closer you get to the ground, the more flare the tree will have. If you remove the lower dog, it gives you about 1" more of usable bar length.

It could serve as a way to get over constipation, you look at that saw, and it scares the sh!t out of you. Just a thought.

That could be a valid reason for some but then it would be best to remove the inner dog as it would be the one digging into your shoulder. The oustide dog would not touch you.
