Gentlemen, thanks for the help removing a limb over a tile roof. Ultimately I just ran a rope through a limb above, behind and and to the side of the branch I was to remove. Then I used a pole saw and pushed the loop of a running bowline all the way to the end of the dead branch. I cut the base and held it with my free hand while my groundsman hoisted the leading end up and away. The I let go and the branch swung harmlessly away from the garage. I about turned this job down b/c of liability/inexperience, but I didn't b/c I knew I could get some help here. Thanks.

Nice work! a good trick to know for limbs in similar situations but too big to hold onto and too dead to trust their holding wood is to put a webbing sling bridge from the trunk to the limb, then cut and hoist up and disconnect the sling for lowering.

1. Polesaw proves its worth once again.
2. Would've been easier yet if you'd used your tail for a buttline instead of using your hand. Best to keep that thing "handy" (ararar) for other things...
Never know when you'll need it on short notice.

By this he means a sling girthed to each side of the cut and attached with a carabiner.

the slings catch the load, then you can reposition and dispose at your leasure.
