Replace Homelite XL ignition coil?

Am I correct that to remove the XL ignition coil I have to pull the entire engine from the case? I can't see how else to get the sparkplug boot out. Advice?

Correct, if you can’t pull off the boot.

First take some needle nose pliers & try to pull the spark plug terminal/wire up & out through the plug boot where the spark plug sets. Spray a shot of WD-40 in there to help lube the wire, they usually pull right out. Note the angle that the wire/terminal comes out, so you can pull it back in the same way.

Also can remove the two coil mounting screws & you will have a bit more room (wire extends out) to work on that boot terminal.
