Just a quick question about tree and pole spikes. Why is it that you cant put pole gaffs on tree irons with replaceable gaffs. I have a set of Klien spurs wearing tree gaffs but Wesspur states that you cant put pole gaffs on them.

Is it just a safety issue or is it something to do with the shape of the irons? All the other brands of spurs seemed to be the same here-ie not replacing your gaffs with a different type. It would be great to be able to swap between the 2 without having to purchase another set of irons.
thanks
Andrew

IMO it's the company's way of getting you to buy two different sets of gaffs. Rather sleazy if you ask me.

Aren't the location of the gaffs different location (on the metal bar) on tree gaffs opposed to pole gaffs?

I have a set of Klien climbers and I use both the pole gaffs and tree gaffs..the spikes themselves are interchangable

racerx i tended to lean toward the opinion that the statement about pole and tree spikes not being interchangeable on the irons sounds like a move to make us part with more money too!!!

silverz im not sure at all -you may very well be right. maybe the longer spikes on tree gaffs means that the mounting holes on the irons could be higher up the shank whereas the wee short pole spikes might be mounted lower toward the foot. That does make sense but i just dunno.

But i like your post gilraine!!! you give me hope!!! the actual spacing holes on the spikes must be the same for mounting? and do they work ok? now im wondering if you have the tree irons or pole irons..? do you find that the gaff you bought separately from the iron mounts well on the irons? that is, not to high up the shank if its a short pole spike or if it was a tree gaff on a pole iron that the point isnt waay below the stirrup? Id be really interested to know and thanks everyone for your replies.

nope! not according to the wesspur catalogue you werent but im thinking i might be on the lookout for a wee set of pole gaffs for my kleins now!

I use the pole spikes more than the tree spikes, just depends on the tree..
I believet the irons to be the same, the pictures on the Klien site looked identical.. with the shorter pole gaffs, the point just touches the ground, with the tree gaffs, they dig in a good bit.. I prefer the pole gaffs most of the time, as I feel they give me a better feel... the tree gaffs only go on in trees with really thick bark.
