Hi guys...
Not sure if anyone saw it over on the stolen goods thread, but my Stihl 084 was stolen from my Truck a couple of weeks ago
I'm looking to get a replacement saw and wanted some opinions. My 084 was in immaculate condition and really was a great purchase. Should I hold out in the hope that a good one comes up on ebay etc or pay a bit more and go for an MS880, I have been offered a new one from our local dealer for a really good price. Are the MS880's as good or better than the 084?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
James

that sucks. i see your in england .hopefully there arent too many 084's there so its possible it will turn up. check the saw shops and pawn shops .get the word out

Thanks for the advice guys... Is the ms880 a better saw than a good used 084..? What are the differences?

Cheers

Sorry to hear about your saw being stolen.#
The 880 is rev limited so if you want to do some powerhead tweaking an 088 or 084 would be easier. Other than that there is not a lot in them.

Thanks Bob. Pretty sure I am going to keep the saws stock for the time being, not confident enough to play around with them yet...
Recently bought an MS362 to replace my 034av which was also stolen and when asked the guy at the dealers said there was no need to run a few tanks through it first before loading it up at WOT. If I went for a new MS880 are they ready to go straight out of the box on my 36" Alaskan.?

I still wouldn't do that for milling. There is no problem with new saws going WOT for cross cutting but I would use it in cross cutting for at least 5 tank fulls - cross cutting is rarely WOT for more than 15-20 continuous seconds as the saw has to be repositioned to continue to make the cut. Once I had done that I even cut the first 5 - 6 slabs under variable rpm conditions - that was probably unnecessary but I wanted to be sure - milling voids the warranty on any new saw. My 880 was a never used but I had no warranty because it was onsold to me and Stihl warranties in Australia are non-transferrable.

Best thing is not to tell the dealer you are milling and keep the body and bar clean - if you buy a bar from them use it for cross cutting and put it aside and use another.

Cheers Bob, great advice.
Will keep you posted as to what and when I buy anything...

Thanks

James

Dunno if I'd worry about the rev limiter if using for milling.

One plus of the 880 is all the parts are still available.

Good point on not telling the man you was milling with it, if problems develop.
