all i can tell u is dont hit a sweet gum piece of firewood lenth log ,with a splittiing mall or axe . it may end up planted in your forhead. a splitter is the only thing to split gum with. imo

Sweet gum will not split with axe or maul, but you can slab it off. Take a small cut at a time around the edges and when the axe hits twist the handle. It will work but it is hard and slow work. That is experience talking. Tom
