Somewhere in a tree
I've got to block down some 3' Pin Oak this week and just checked my sling on a tree about the same size here at the house. I can get around it but don't have enough to even tie a safe timber hitch. Neither my stable braid nor tenex sling is big enough to do it. I would prefer to set my sling and block with a cow hitch anyway. I'm going to Vermeer tomorrow in hopes that they have a big enough eye sling for me to do this job.

How long of an eye sling do I need to tie a cow hitch around 3' wood? If they don't have anything long enough in stock would it be possible to make a sling out of my 3/4 stable braid with a tied eye and be safe?

don't know but what is under the tree a house or driveway or what

It will take a double length of rope to tie the cow hitch this way but you can tie it anywhere in the long length of your 3/4" rope so no rope cutting is necessary. You may even want to move the point on the rope that the pulley loads so you don't stress the same point over and over again. The snap of course represents a block.
