Skip chain works best for me. It doesn't bog the saw down as much and also seems to clear the noodles out better than full comp.

Is the tree already down?

I'd be in utter shock and amazement to see a silver maple 6' diameter with a solid stem. Never seen one bigger than 3-4' without significant decay.

- Haven't tryed it yet but took some 36" full comp chain & made it into a grandberg type for the 36" has 19 cutters the rest are chip clear. The grandberg uses 10 degrees so will make one of them like that & leave the 2ed one w factory angles to test out when I do finally run into something like you talkin about. If you purchase direct allready made around $ 75.00 plus shipping ea. as I recall.

Search function. Grandberg ripping chain. You'll see it "Making a ripping chain." If your carefull you'll only use up a couple dremel cut off discs using a dremel get the thin ones.
