Had a chain disassembled to give the cutters some individual attention and have had troubles with the spinner face breaking down and losing its shape. I have never used one before for that many rivets so dont know if I just got poor heat treat or whether that is par for the course. Did find that a dab of moly grease on every rivet helped but dont appreciate the mess. would appreciate hearing of others experience with spinners. Im a bit sick of this one right now! lol!

Hi Frank, that happened to me when I first got my spinner. I think I just changed bits and used the 325 one. Spin them incrementaly and alternately with a light touch. The raised part of the bit will crack if they contact the tie straps or you put the chain in backwards. Hope this helps you greenhorn. LOL

I probably was horsing it a bit too much at first John. My stihl dealer buzzes them up amazing quick but maybe he goes thru a lot of bits. I did manage to get one tie strap flipped..... hate when that happens. About two more days work on that chain and I'll be ready to challenge you. Wouldn't it be a revolting development if it just disintegrated!

Hi Frank, it sounds like you are really commited to making a good chain. It should outcut mine with no problem.
I'm having alot of luck with chopping the chain with the modified wheel on the 511, then cleaning the gullets and taking down the rakers before I put it on the Sure Sharp. The hand filing for sqaure is more than I can do.
Are you filing or grinding Frank?
John

John, I am filing but when Jacob J gets around to sending it I will have a grinder. I do set the angles with a round grinder to get uniformity, but I find it is very hard to take the tooth back with it, without occasionally hardening a tooth to where the chisel bit file wont touch it, then I have to spot anneal. You dont have that problem when grinding. There are just so many things to do wrong.
Doing the preliminary work with the 511 takes a lot of the wear off your final sharpening stone. If you are taking much material off you lose the sharpness inside the corner and have to redress the wheel. The sad part is that when you get the chain to its fastest you don't have much left. Any minor mishap and its toast along with all the hours thats in it. But as you know it wouldn't be much use going to a gunfight with a jacknife!
Im using some square filed just for cutting some firewood just for practise filing; and it does take a lot of hours before it gets satisfying, unlike a lot of other things that are fun even when your not very good at it.

A couple things come readily to mind ... (like the answer to "Who are you going to satisfy with that?" is "Me, of course!")

You got it Glen!

In reality even if it looks a bit higgildy piggildy square filed will cut a bit ahead of your best round filed. Square filing is as much fun as a man can possibly have with his clothes on !It takes a while to get to where it is really funny tho!
Re the Borazon wheel. Im sure it would do the job dandy but sure is pricey. I have some diamond cut off wheels that do cut cool but are way too coarse.

Hi Frank,

I`ve found that keeping an oil can next to the spinner is the ticket. A drop on each head and you quickly get a nice clean spin and the anvils seem to last a long time.

I can usually spin up 500-750 chains on a anvil, ive got a biger one and a smaller one i swap out.
they usually end up breaking.

At that rate there is something wrong in what I was doing or with my anvils. I went back over a bunch tonight using lube on every one as Russ suggested and they smoothed out and looked better. How many turns would it take on the crank per rivet?

Frank

not sure how many cranks.
the spinner handle, i spin the ???? out of it. fast as i can spin it.

The crank, i crank it nice and easy and after the first rivet one a 3/8 chain say, on my spinner it is done with the crank at 3 o clock,
so i always crank it around to the 3 o clock spot each time. it doesn't take long to crank out a bunch of chains doing this.
