When I saw this amazing tree pic I was immediately impressed by the trees ability to keep itself standing, given the unbalanced load presented.

What is the official word on a tree like this? If a valuable structure was under it, would it be safe? Would a supporting pole(in orange) be necessary to qualify this tree as being safe?

Just curious...

Re: But is it SAFE?

[/B][/QUOTE]Maybe. Wind has worked on it for decades; wood has formed to hold it up. I'm more worried about the lack of taper than the asymmetry.

So, its safe?

From my desk in Milwaukee i would say yes. Trees are self optimizing organisms. If given to oportunity, they will grow in a way to handle the stress loads.

I would have to walk up and see if there is any decay.

The lack of a root flair is the thing that I would not like.

The lack of taper could mean that the top was blown out 50 years ago, or it could be a speicies charicteristic.
