I found this saw in my grandpas barn and I can't figure out why somebody poured oil all over it...

It hasn't been used in years so I thought I would tear it down and check it out. Turns out the the p/c looks clean and the arrow pointing to the exhaust is still visible. I haven't decided on what comp tester to get so I'm not sure if it's still good or needs a new ring.

So I need about 5 gallons of degreaser to clean this up and be able to tear it down.

A little Purple Power beforehand and run it on the potscrubber cycle. Be sure to wipe down any grease left behind.

that saw will most likely clean up better than you think, could turn out to be a real nice saw, good luck with it....................:chop:

I have a 117,and the oiler is uh, "enthusiastic " shall we say. It pours the oil on even at idle speeds, so i would say it just puts out alot of oil and no one bothered cleaning it. Nice saws though!

Yup!

that thing will 'buff right out' looks to me like gramps liked to use old motor oyl?

Not really impressive saws at 50cc, but much better at 68cc.

Hey they be split case and closed transfer, better than a lot of stuff people think are the cats arse eh?

Them clutch covers are always unsightly on them saws. Rust Oleum Allis Chalmers is a real close match.

It looks to have a small crack in the front of the oil tank. Which is another part of the saw that differs from today, it's separate from the case. So I could replace it, but I'll epoxy it until I find a dirt cheap replacement.

Yep, I have a minty one... besides the clutch cover. :(

I didn't think they were painted yellow, Ted

Hi Richard, not sure I'll ever own a yellow Dolmar, let alone ever see one in person. Our AS brothers 'down under' have a few, though.

While Macs are my favorites, Homelites/Huskies/Dolmars/Pioneers are all second loves.

It's perfect besides that clutch cover

Thank You.
I bet yours will clean up nicely, besides the clutch cover....lol.
Purple Power is the best stuff I've ever used for cleaning saws.
I buy it by the 5 gal bucket. I mix it 50/50 with water, sometimes a little stronger like 80/20 for real bad grease. Put in an empty Windex bottle and spray it on.
I have a slop sink in the shop, I spray it off with a water hose. Obviously do not get any water internally, and it's best to run them asap after the bath,
to insure any water is flushed out and give the bearings good oil. I usually take the recoils 100% apart, clean the spring, then wipe it off with light oil.
Finish off with WD40.
