this is an ash in my neighborhood.
The homeowner "inherited" this tree when he bought the lot, built the house and put the retaining wall around it. The city protected the tree (under covenant) while the neighborhod was built out, and now the homeowner said, when I offered to prune out all the dead and try and save the tree, "no thanks, I just want it to die, so I can get rid of it." :(

Jay Banks, recognize it? it's in ashton, off catoctin circle.
Get it?, they named the neighborhood after the tree.

How should I measure this tree?

For "DBH" on a tree that forks below breast height, measure the smallest diameter of the trunk between the butt swell and the forks.--Too bad about the owner's attitude.:(

Get it?, they named the neighborhood after the tree.  Do any of the neighbors have an opinion? I believe in property rights, but I believe each member of the community should be able to express their opinion (to local politicos and media) as forcefully as they feel.

Also the owner is throwing away property value; a sympathetic real estate appraiser could be solicited to do a pro bono before-and-after appraisal. Looks like a potential 5-figure asset to me.

:p
For height, there is no substitute for climbing up , attaching the end of a tape measure to the tip of your pole, and dropping it to the ground.:blob2:

from looking at your picture i bet that trees had root damage ..typical home owner ignorance though.....
