was cleaning up a couple of saws the other day, and found some sort of substance (sawdust?) between the fins on the jug. took a carb screwdriver to get it all out. made me wonder how much heat wasnt getting dispersed. how often, and to what extent to others clean their saws? i usually clean with air around the carb, under the clutch drum and bar mount, but until the other day i hadnt ever cleaned the jug. what does everybody else do?

The other day I tried something new to clean up a saw I was assembling, and it worked really well. I've been using Purple Power concentrated degresser, available at Autozone, but took it a notch further. I boiled water on the stove, and dumped it into a spray bottle that sprays a good strong stream. Then I dumped some Purple Power concentrate in the spray bottle. By spraying it very forcefully, it steamed the gunk right off in all the hard to reach places. It's all biodegradable. The spray bottle gets a little warm to hold, but it worked very well.

At work with our cutoffsaws and our chainsaws part of my PM program is to clean the fins on the jugs for the reason that you stated,it helps the saw run cooler.Especially in the warmer months,And on the cutoff saws , the gunk is a mix of transite, ductile iron, which is what most pipes are made of in our industry, and when it gets wet and dries, its like cement.
