Hey guys,
My father left this old John Deere saw behind when he passed away in 2001. My brother and I have both used it since then, but it's in need of some TLC. The last time I used it (about 2 years ago) I couldn't keep the chain properly adjusted and it would run great for a while, then run rough and die after a bit.
So I've started to tear into it a bit in order to try and spruce it up some. But before I get too far into this project, I'd like to get a positive ID so that I can look for the proper parts. I've read that the old Echo saws (far more common, I believe) were pretty much identical to the John Deere's, so any cross reference between models would also be appreciated.
Just guessing, based on the ID plate in photo 4 below, it looks like maybe a John Deere 51SVA? Would that be 51cc? And would this be the same as an Echo CS-510?
As you can see, the safety handle is [mostly] missing, the clutch cover is damaged, and there's something rattling around loose inside the muffler (a part of the muffler itself, I believe). I'd like to fix all of these things.
The sprocket is stamped "3/8" and has seven [worn] teeth. I also need to replace the chain adjustment bolt/nut if I can figure out how to remove the old one as the bolt is bent. I'm figuring I'll need an air filter, spark plug and maybe a carb rebuild kit for optimum performance.
Oh, and the bar oiler doesn't seem to work. We had to manually apply oil the last time I used it. Other than that it's a great saw though! Bwhahaha!
How hard will it be to find parts for this thing? Is it worth sprucing up? Compression seems to be real good. Also, can ya'll tell me what the specific bar length is by the photos below? I'm not certain exactly where the measurement is taken. I'd call this one a 20" bar, but technically it looks to be 19"?
Any specs, experience with, suggestions, or advice on this saw would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
